Me Need Info 1 Place

So, if you’ve read my piece on “Pick the Brain” (and according to one frustrated commentator (see previous “post”), you may not) you’ll see that I hate fax machines. Oh how I despise them. But they were ultra-cool when they first arrived. Makes you wonder how uncool our current stuff might be in 20 years. I was trying to convince my 8 year old nephew that someday he’ll be uncool – he’ll sing along to by-then-retro songs he loved in his youth. (This began as a way of explaining why 80s music that youngsters think is sheer crap is AWESOME to me.) He didn’t believe me. And then I stopped tormenting the poor boy. He’s only 8, after all!

And I wonder which social networking sites/styles will survive in upcoming years? How long will Facebook, or Twitter be around? Yeah, I know I shouldn’t be asking those questions, being that I’m in this biz. I should have the answers. Well, I don’t.

I’m assuming they’ll be some futuristic network which will combine everything we use (Plaxo has the right idea seed, but not quite there) into one handy and efficient site. And I’m jonesin’ for that bad. ‘Cause between you, you, you and me (I think there’s only 3 people reading this blog, right?) I really need a way to have a life online that doesn’t involve, well, living online. Me Like the outside world too.

My teenage years were in the 1960s, so I’m siding with your nephew. 🙂

Just one place to go to that connects everything would be great. It’s something I’m hanging out for too. I’ve definitely been spending too much time online this year. I’m using Facebook for my networking – haven’t got the space in my life for MySpace, Bebo and the rest – and have Twitter and delicious integrated into it now, but I still have to visit other places for my emails and blog reader. Actually, I don’t think some of the hangovers from when Facebook was for students only are working that well for me now. Perhaps somebody will take what works on Facebook for all age groups and start again from scratch. Perhaps Plaxo is a bit like that. I did take a look at it but not that closely as yet. Also looked at Eons – thanks for the pointer to that – I qualify, but it’s not really my thing. To be honest, I’d rather hang out with my 12 year old Digital Native son than with people my own age.

Anyway, thanks for your blog. Have a fun day!

I hate fax machines, too. I don’t understand why anyone still uses them. Funny thing, even email seems like it’s on the way out. I’ve heard that the high-school generation is communicating online almost exclusively through social media apps like Facebook and Myspace. No idea if it’s statistically true. Sounds like it could be.

@ Bob -thanks so much for your wonderful comment. So you people who grew up in the 60s get to be cool now. True, but sigh… I’d have to agree about the only networking with people your own age. While I have been shocked by how many people I meet & I late discover (through Facebook) are in their early twenties – the very fact that I thought they were older proves that were I to eliminate friends based on a number alone, I would be sorely missing out.

@ Jonathon. That does sound true…. Hey, once Facebook allows us to actually attach a document (rather than append a post), we’ll really have to worry 🙂

i’ve wondered about this, too. and i bet you that by, oh, 2020, the term “social media” will be sooooo 2008’s.

there WAS something like social media 12 years ago. we called them forums and alt.nets. before that, there were bulletin boards. so the IDEA of social media will probably stick around. but what will it look like?

maybe we should make a date. get together on july 12, 2020 (face to face! yes!) and talk about this. oh,and will we still be meeting at starbucks?
